Fact of the Day: Bolivar South American soldier and statesman Simóolivar, "The Liberator," led the revolutions against Spanish rule in New Granada (renamed Colombia, or Gran Colombia, in 1819), Peru, and Upper Peru (Bolivia). Reluctantly, in 1830, BolÃr realized that his presence had become a danger to the internal and external peace of the nations that owed their independence to him, and he planned to take refuge in Europe - but died of tuberculosis before the end of that year.
